Time’s not as still these days when we have a lot of change
happening around us. of course our developed technology and dynamic culture
come into mind when we refer to the holistic change in our society but I would
like to point out a realization that has grasped my thought.
Living in the City can be a wonderful thing. My life and experience
so far hasn’t been as wild and exciting as I sometimes imagined it to be;
basically because of the lifestyle planted in me from home and having to come
from a family where old school is the “ish”, I must say, there is absolutely no
meter rule that can measure the gap between our generation and that of theirs.
In present age, our way of dating, marrying, keeping in
touch with friends, having good times (partying), our design in music, dance
and basically almost everything about our being, has a complete contrast with
how things were done during the “folk” times. For sure! We are all aware that
times were and have been different and as such we can’t move forward if we continue
to stick to the old times. But could we just take a look how we treat our time with
regards to some of the many norms we posit as a youth.
It would take a lot of pages to name and break down every
norm we have; as there are too many shooting from directions we don’t see or
know but let me straighten some of the obvious. Pertaining to our 21st
century culture where pre martial sex is the “in” thing or as lots would say,
“issa normal distin” and the sickening one is when people record themselves
having coitus and share it on social media. More so, our way of having a good
time is through hardcore clubbing and our “hustle” is engaging in fraud and so
on and so forth.
Maybe people are desperate to be famous so they come up with
the craziest and probably foolish ideas to get them out there. Also, I think,
in a way the existence of condoms are rather encouraging the early sexual
activities or maybe I am just “prehistoric”….LOL! Either way, we’re going to
end up having a lot of “Matatas” if we don’t sit up and critically examine the
import of what we “patriotically adhere to” (i.e. the norms of today)
To be honest, some people should just consider going into
event planning…like burials…because the path they are taking is leading them to
their graves. Yeah true, life is short and you only live once but that doesn’t
mean we should praise foolishness and at the end of it all, say ‘we’re
chilling’.
In spite of all this, there are some acts which have vexed
me soothingly and frankly, they are really encouraging. For instance, doing
away with the stereotypes that have engulfed our horizon to expand and also
pursing passion rather than what society expects – Go to school, learn hard,
pass and get a good job. Though that system has worked quite well in the past, it
doesn’t operate to the maximum in the new age.
Here’s what I’m thinking: every time we tend to view
something as “normal”; be it an act or some shenanigan, let’s stop to think for
a moment how relevant that norm is before we practice it and pass it round. Sure!
It’s ok to have a good time and be adventurous but we have to kick it down a
notch when it hits to the extreme.
If we fail to discipline ourselves now, imagine what the
next generation would do. Let each one of us start with the man in the mirror!
